While the sports world is in an uproar about Manny Ramirez testing positive for performance enhancing drugs, ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre has told the Minnesota Vikings that he’ll remain retired.

Reports throughout the week have claimed Favre was meeting with Vikings coach Brad Childress to discuss returning yet again from retirement. However, reports also claimed that the shoulder problems that plagued Favre at the end of the year last year had not healed enough for the gunslinger to return.

While I don’t doubt for a minute Favre’s desire to stick it to the Packers front office, I believe the collateral damage that would be done to the Packer fans and the health of his shoulder will keep Favre on the sidelines this year.

Of course, thanks to the golden boy’s many tearful retirements that didn’t stick, I’m sure well be subjected to several more speculative stories about Favre’s plans for the upcoming season.

The Philadelphia Eagles have reportedly traded Lito Sheppard to the New York Jets in exchange for the Jets’ 5th round pick in this year’s draft, and a conditional pick in 2010.

Sheppard was made expendable by the Eagles’ signing of Asante Samuel last off season and their resigning of Joselio Hansen this year.

The two time Pro Bowler is expected to be back in the starting lineup for the Jets, and his performance will determine what draft pick the Jets give up in next year’s draft. The pick is reported to be no lower than the 4th round, but could be as high as the 2nd.

Scott had previously been offered a 5 year deal to stay with the Ravens but told the team late last night that he wanted to test the free agent market, and it didn’t take long for offers to start coming in.

ESPN.com is reporting that the Jets offer has been agreed to in principle by Scott’s agent and that the deal is Scott’s approval before becoming official. If Scott does end up in New York, it will be a huge blow to the Ravens defense which could lose leader Ray Lewis to free agency as well.

The New York Jets new head coach, Rex Ryan, was hailed for the imposing defense he coordinated in Baltimore. And, it just so happens that 2 of the main components of that defense, Ray Lewis and Bart Scott are set to become free agents this Friday.

Naturally, the NY Daily News is reporting that the Jets are likely to pursue Lewis but will target Scott should the bidding for Lewis shoot out of their price range.

The Jets have plenty of cap space, having released tight end Chris Baker and moving towards releasing guard Brandon Moore, and Ryan is going to be expected to drastically improve the Jets’ D.

Last year, the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets made a big off season splash by trading for Brett Favre from the Green Bay Packers. This year, with Favre retired (he claims for the last time) and Eric Mangini run out of town following the Jets’ second half collapse, the Gang Green need to establish their new identity.

Although he’s sure to be pricey, a Ray Lewis signing would set the tone early for Rex Ryan’s tenure, and would instantly solidify the Jets as a defense first team.
